Can you trademark the name of a book?

I get a lot of phone calls about trademarking the name of a book. The short answer to this question is this: You cannot trademark the name of a single creative work. For example, if you write a book called "I LOVE TRADEMARKS", then that is not something that you'll be able to trademark. However, if you write a series of books using the name "I LOVE TRADEMARKS", then it would be possible to get a trademark for that name since it would no longer be considered a "single" creative work. This is how the names "HARRY POTTER" and "FOR DUMMIES" are able to be trademarked for books.
